Description: When you receive contact by an attorney or subpoena from a court, what do you do? Your first reaction will likely be to feel dread and anxiety (DeCino et al., 2017). Whether or not you’ve dealt with attorneys and courts before, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge needed to handle such occurrences. Gaining this knowledge may lead you to feel more confident in responding appropriately to the legal aspects of our profession.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to explain how to:
- respond to subpoenas
- talk with attorneys on the phone
- get paid for consultation and testimony
- do therapy with children of divorcing or divorced parents
William L. Buchanan, Ph.D., ABPP is a licensed psychologist in Georgia and is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). He specializes in Clinical Child and Family Psychology and in Neuropsychology. His practice is primarily outpatient psychological services including individual, marital and family therapy, psychological and neuropsychological testing, and consultation. Dr. Buchanan conducts custody evaluations and forensic assessments. He supervises doctoral students in clinical psychology for assessment practicums and for therapy practicums, and Post-Doctoral Psychology Fellows. Dr. Buchanan provides consultation and supervision to other mental health professionals. He serves as an expert witness, and consults with attorneys. He consulted with the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (Licensing Board) and testified for the Board as to the standard of care for the practice of psychology.
